Description

GPD is a leading manufacturer of mini-computers with a wide range of products. In addition to gaming-oriented models such as the Win 2, GPD has also introduced paper-based models such as the P2 Max, offering a wide range of products. The GPD Win 3 is powered by Intel’s 11th generation Tiger Lake processors and is equipped with Intel’s Xe built-in graphics chip, which is capable of providing good gaming performance.

The GPD WIN 3 is similar to the Sony VAIO UX50 with its sliding cover design. The usual appearance is similar to that of a tablet PC, but pushing the screen upward reveals a hidden keyboard that provides convenient text input.

In addition to the dual analog joysticks, cross keys and ABXY buttons, there are also L1, L2, R1 and R2 buttons on the top of the device, which are quite functional. According to the information leaked so far, the analog joystick is made of ALPS material and supports pressing (i.e. L3 and R3), while L2 and R2 buttons also support analog operation, which means that some of the controller’s functions are almost the same as the Microsoft Xbox One handle.

In terms of hardware specifications, the Win 3 features a 5.5″, 720p, IPS panel screen, an Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor, 16GB of LPDDR4X-4266 memory and a PCIe Gen 4×4 interface solid state drive. Another feature of the Win 3 is that it is a good choice for the user.

Another feature of Win 3 is the Thunderbolt 4 terminal, which is the same type of terminal as USB Type-C terminal, but supports up to 40Gbps data transfer speed, and supports audio and video output and power input, and is also compatible with USB 4.0 and USB 3.x, making it more convenient for external devices and monitors.

The most notable feature of the Win 3 is the 11th generation Core processor codenamed Tiger Lake. The Xe graphics chip inside the processor has an explosive performance growth compared to the previous generation Iris.

The Tiger Lake processor has different TDP modes such as 15W, 28W, and 28W with Dynamic Tuning (DT). Since the power and cooling solution used in Win 3 is still uncertain, the author has compiled the performance tests of the three modes below for easy reference.

However, it should be noted that the following data is obtained from the Core i7-1185G7, which has a maximum Boost clock of 4.8GHz, 100MHz higher than the Core i7-1165G7, and the clock of its built-in display chip is increased from 1.3Ghz to 1.35Ghz, which is slightly higher than the Win 3’s. On the other hand, the test was conducted using The resolution is Full HD, not 720p as in Win 3.

The above figures were tested in Full HD resolution. If the resolution is adjusted to 720p and the picture quality is lowered, there is a chance that the FPS will be pushed up to 60 frames, which will give the handheld a certain level of gaming capability.

GPD WIN 3 may be available for pre-order after Spring 2021, but no price information has been announced yet. I guess it will be around $1,299, more information to be announced.
